You may have seen the articles in the news: Tenants at White Eagle Woods mobile home park in Stone County, Missouri allegedly received a notice from their landlord asking them to “leave a bowl of antifreeze” on their front porches to poison community cats. It’s a shocking story, brought to our attention by concerned cat advocates across the country.

The Animal Cruelty Task Force with the Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) is working with the Stone County Sheriff’s office to investigate the crime. We have reached out to the Humane Society of Missouri and local groups–like 412 Felines of Southwest Missouri–on this issue.

According to the Humane Society of Missouri there are 12-15 cats remaining, the majority of whom are socialized. Socialized cats will be taken to the Tri-Lakes Humane Society, while feral cats will be brought to Springfield Animal Advocacy Foundation where they will be spayed or neutered and then brought to CARE who will be seeking barn homes for the cats.

A town hall meeting will be planned to educate the public about humanely addressing community cats. The cruelty case investigations by both  HSMO and the Stone County Sherriff’s department are on-going. Kudos to the community of Stone County for working together to protect these cats!
