UPDATE: Good news! On Wednesday, February 4, 2015 the Virginia Senate voted to approve the Promote Adoptions Bill, SB 1381, by a vote of 33-5. On Thursday, February 5, 2015 the Virginia Senate voted to approve the Community Cat Bill, SB 693, by a vote of 28-10. Both bills now move on to the House of Delegates. Good news from the Virginia Senate Agriculture Committee! The committee voted to approve two lifesaving bills; one to support TNR efforts, and one to promote the adoption of cats from animal shelters. Now these bills go to the entire Virginia Senate.

- The Promote Adoptions Bill, SB 1381, would clarify the definition of a private animal shelter to ensure that each shelter is “operated for the purpose of finding permanent adoptive homes and facilitating other lifesaving outcomes for animals.” This clarification would guarantee that all private shelters operate with a purpose that is in line with basic public expectations. - The Community Cat Bill, SB 693, would clarify Virginia law to remove any doubt that Trap-Neuter-Return practices are permitted. The bill would ensure there are no obstacles to animal shelters and animal controls participating in Trap-Neuter-Return. Take Action »
The Agriculture Committee voted down the TNR Restriction Bill, SB 699, which was a good decision. Unfortunately, the Spay/Neuter Bill, SB 698, was withdrawn.
