As a taxpayer, you have the right to know what happens to animals in your state’s pounds and shelters, and how your tax dollars are spent. Right now, the Alabama House of Representatives is considering the Shelter Transparency Bill, HB 85 and SB 51, which would require shelters to keep a monthly report of the intake and disposition of animals and the costs of running the shelter, and to make these records available to the public.

We don’t know exactly what happens in most sheltersthey aren’t required to tell anyone. But you fund them, and you deserve to know how many cats are brought in, how many are adopted, and how many are killed there. The Shelter Transparency Bill will lead to more responsible animal pounds and shelters, and allow the public access to information they need to make informed decisions in their community.
