Bethesda, Md.A group of cats who were chained to wooden boxes and generated widespread social media attention last October are now living in dramatically better conditions thanks to Alley Cat Allies and a number of partner organizations. Alley Cat Allies has secured a large outdoor fence enclosure for the cats, who are no longer chained at their Shenandoah Valley home.

“This is a much better living situation for these cats, and we appreciate that the owners are now providing them with both freedom and safety,” said Becky Robinson, president and founder of Alley Cat Allies. “In this era of humane cat care and best practices, easy-to-install cat fences are becoming commonplace. There is no reason to chain any animal.”

The six catsRoger, Sassy May, Lilly, Frady Cat, Gizmo and Tinkerare now free to play, run and rest outside while protected by the enclosure, which has a pivoting arched top to ensure the cats won’t escape. The outdoor cat fence enclosure is manufactured by Purr…fect Fence and available at purrfectfence.com.

Alley Cat Allies worked with the Richmond Animal League, Voices for Animals, Best Friends Animal Society, local mayor Wayne Printz and Purrfect Fence to obtain and install the enclosure.

Alley Cat Allies is the only national advocacy organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cats. By establishing and promoting standards of care, the organization has brought humane treatment of cats into the national spotlight.
