The Kaua’i County Council is considering an ordinance that would require community cat caregivers to register their colonies and make it illegal to feed cats without a permit. This severely limits Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and efforts to care for community cats. Discussions about this ordinance are happening behind closed doors, which is unfair to citizens.

Kaua’i Residents: Tell your Council to oppose the ordinance and hold all meetings in public view.

Under the proposed ordinance, there are also strict restrictions on where colonies can be located. That means there would be virtually nowhere on the island where TNR could legally take place. The ordinance would allow animal control to remove any colony not in compliance, which means they could round up all existing colonies and kill the cats. Pet cats could be caught in these round ups too.

Kaua’i Residents: The cats need you! They deserve our care and compassion, and TNR is the only humane and effective way to help them and the community. The Council wants to protect wildlife in Kaua’i, but killing cats is not the answer. It is cruel, ineffective, and will not save wildlife.
