Great news for Maryland pet owners! Thanks to the action of Maryland residents, a shelter reform bill that would protect pets in shelters passed the legislature on April 11. The bill requires animal control to carefully scan an animal for a microchip before the animal is adopted out or killed. It also requires animal control to make a reasonable effort to locate a pet’s owner and tell them where and how they can reclaim their pet.

The bill is now headed to Governor Larry Hogan’s desk, where it must be signed in order to become law. If it passes, lost pets will be safer in Maryland’s shelters and more owners will reunite with their beloved companions!

Thank you to everyone who took action for being a voice for the animals! We will watch as the bill progresses and keep you updated.
